The presented project investigates the potential of space enclosed by ribbon-like modern blocks of flats in Żegrze district, Poland. It’s a speculation about a traditional city grid appearing inside the overscaled urban block. In this case, the existing structure becomes a morphological cause and despite its pejorative characteristics, it is capable of producing a positive result. The density itself is regarded as a very holistic phenomenon, which tells about the intensity of experience, formal heterogeneity, and possibilities of the space. The masterplan for the whole area has been prepared based on the previous research. The detailed solution covers only one of the set plots. The main goal for the urban conception was to design high-quality public spaces which could compensate dysfunctions of existing structure.
The architectural part presents set of 48 autonomous dwelling units, approachable form the public space, with an access to the semiprivate green urban interior. The underground car park has been provided beneath. The areas of the designed dwellings vary from 80 to 200 square meters. None of the units is repetitive, which poses a counterpoint to the existing context. The design was influenced by the idea of polyvalence, which is trying to make the form of the building complex and stable with the capacity of hosting different kinds of functions without having them undergo changes themselves. This way of thinking about the plan enables its users to freely adapt and inhabit the space.
The whole project is an important input in the discussion about the future socialist modernism living estates. The chosen location is only an example of much more places sharing same spatial problems. In terms of architecture, the project poses a question whether the way we dwell is our real preference or is it just a reflection of the revolution introduced by the architecture of the new objectivity.
